Tim Maguire exhibition at Newcastle Art Gallery is cinematic in scale; romantic in nature

08 Nov 2017

A major survey exhibition by the internationally recognised artist Tim Maguire will be on display at Newcastle Art Gallery throughout summer - filling the gallery with large scale, incredibly detailed paintings by the UK-born Australian artist. Newcastle Art Gallery is the only location for this unique major exhibition which has been developed by the Gallery in partnership with the artist.

Well known for his painstaking methods, intense detail and panoramic vistas, Maguire's paintings are a symbolic reference to mortality and the fleeting nature of life, and his earlier career paintings in particular reference 17th century Dutch and Flemish masters.

EVERYTHING CHANGES: Tim Maguire 2002 - 2017 surveys Maguire's arts practice within this 15-year period, including his use of photographic techniques intertwined with painting techniques - employing a colour separation process more akin to digital colour photography and printmaking. New works of art recently created in his studio in France will be exhibited for the first time in Australia at Newcastle Art Gallery.

"This exhibition has been developed in collaboration with Tim Maguire, and we are honored and delighted to showcase this incredibly well-respected artist in this significant exhibition," said Gallery Manager Lauretta Morton.

The tranquil calm of Maguire's finished paintings belies a highly technical painting process and an extremely low margin of error. His unique colour separation process and his tendency to work in large scale (often creating 3 or 4 metre wide paintings) mean that each layer of painting is often 'a battle with time'.

Maguire has exhibited extensively in both Australia and the UK, and now lives and works between Australia, France and the United Kingdom. He is represented in Australia by Martin Browne Contemporary, Sydney, and Tolarno Galleries, Melbourne.
