Merewether - Patrick Street road and drainage renewal

City of Newcastle is renewing road and drainage infrastructure in Patrick Street, Merewether, between Burwood Street and Kilgour Avenue. Work is underway and is expected to be finished by the end of April 2019.

The existing road and drainage infrastructure in Patrick Street has deteriorated and requires replacement. The project will provide new drainage, footpaths, turf, kerb and gutter, road resurfacing and reconstruction of driveways. The existing drainage pipe passing from 14 Patrick Street to Bar Beach Avenue will be structurally relined.

Sandstone kerbing will be retained where possible and three new Tuckeroos (Cupaniopsis anacardioides) will be planted to replace the three existing trees that will be impacted by the work.

Benefits

The project is a continuation of works to renew the roadway from Scenic Drive to Bar Beach Avenue. The works are intended to provide the following benefits:
  • Improved pedestrian access provided by new concrete footpaths, additional kerb ramps and an improved bus stop at No. 3 Bar Beach Avenue.
  • Enhanced aesthetics by renewal of sandstone kerb in the area.
  • Improved drainage performance, with the drainage system less prone to blockage and providing increased capacity.
  • New seal on the road reducing noise generated by vehicle tyres.

Impacts to residents

We will attempt to minimise the impact on traffic by laterally shifting the lanes to allow two way flow of traffic when possible. Half road closures will be required at times to enable the work to occur.

There will be no on-street parking for the duration of the work, however we will endeavour to maintain resident access.

The majority of the footpath will remain open until the road and drainage work is complete.
