Newcastle - Merewether Street road works
We are undertaking road construction work on Merewether Street Newcastle, between Hunter Street and Centenary Road, on behalf of Hunter and Central Coast Development Corporation. Construction will start in early April and continue into May 2019.
The work involves removal of the road hump over the former heavy rail line east of Civic Station, and incorporates kerb and gutter reconstruction and minor footpath and drainage work.
We have completed road and kerb and gutter reconstruction. Works are continuing during June on the eastern footpath.
Pedestrians now have a less obstructed pathway between Workshop Way and Hunter Street improving access from Newcastle museum and the Honeysuckle precinct.
Post June 2019, works on the eastern and western sides of Merewether Street and traffic management controls are associated with the adjacent development, not City of Newcastle.
Merewether Street remains closed to southbound traffic between Workshop Way and Hunter Street.
What to expect during construction
Work hours will be Monday to Saturday during daylight hours. Notification will be provided to affected businesses and residents if work is required outside of these times.
Pedestrian diversions will be in place as required and traffic in Merewether Street will be impacted as follows:
- Access northbound from Hunter Street and Centenary Road will be maintained for most of the work
- Merewether Street will be closed southbound between Workshop Way roundabout and Hunter Street
- Northbound access to Centenary Road from Hunter Street will be available via traffic control
- Southbound access to Centenary Road will be via Wharf Road and Argyle Street.
There will be some noise from machinery and increased truck movements near the work.
