As Australia's seventh largest city, Newcastle has seen a significant increase in development activity. The 2017-18 financial year was another record year for City of Newcastle, as the total value of building approvals topped $1.2 billion.
This is fantastic for the local economy, with Newcastle attracting strong development and investment activity.
So far in 2018 we have determined more than 1,200 development applications (DA) worth $918 million and as of November 2018 we are currently assessing a further 500+ DAs worth just over $1 billion.
We are committed to determining applications as efficiently as possible. However, the current high volume of development applications is causing determination times to be longer than usual.
Some timelines are outside of our control, such as waiting for additional i nformation from applicants and referrals to third parties (such as State Government agencies). The existing DAs (500+) we currently have will take time to process. Many will not be finalised until 2019.
Any new DAs lodged between now and Christmas are also unlikely to be processed until 2019. We recommend you use our
online Application Tracking system
to track the progress of a development application from lodgement to determination.
We apologise for any inconvenience and commit to the development of a more customer centric approach to applicants over the new year period.
