Council's Natural Connection program delivers a range of activities that connects the community to Newcastle's unique natural areas. Through engagement, education and community partnerships the program strives to conserve and protect our important coastline, estuary, wetlands, bushland and creeks.

Aussie Backyard Bird Count

Make every bird count! From 22 to 28 October Australians across the nation will be heading into their backyards for the annual Aussie Backyard Bird Count.

Join us at our bird-friendly activities to discover the birds of Newcastle and learn how to attract some feathered friends to your own backyard.

Sunday 21 October

9am to 11am - Breakfast with the Birds
King Parrot Shelter, Richley Reserve, Blackbutt

Hear from Tom Clarke, a local bird enthusiast and enjoy a BBQ breakfast before setting out for a Tall Trees Track walk to see some of Newcastle's wonderful feathered friends in their habitat.

Elermore Vale Community Centre

Join native plant horticulturist Maree McCarthy to discover how you can include birdscaping elements at home to attract some feathered friends to your garden. You will have the opportunity to construct a nest box on the day for instant bird habitat in your own backyard!
