Maryland Fenced Off-Leash Dog Park

Overview

The Dogs in Open Space Plan (2019) identified the need to enhance existing off-leash areas and investigate potential opportunities for fenced dog areas within the Newcastle LGA.

The Dogs in Open Space Plan specifically recommended investigating the potential to integrate a fenced off-leash area at Maryland Drive Reserve as part of the Maryland Creek realignment design.

Plans include the provision of two separate fully fenced dog parks for small and large dogs along with improved amenities, access, new trees, landscaping and upgrades to the carpark. View the final concept plan here.

Construction will be undertaken in stages. Stage 1 will commence in April and are expected to be completed by mid-2023. Stage 1 works involve creating one fenced area open to all dogs.

The existing off-leash area will remain open. Naturalisation of Maryland Creek has been taken into consideration with the design of the dog park.

What we heard during community consultation

Key concerns/issues raised during community consultation:

  • Rubbish/drainage issues
  • Drainage/flooding problems in the park
  • Concern with aggression in the larger dog area/separating dogs by size
  • Higher fence needed in the larger dog area
  • Agility stations/dog obstacle course needed
  • The need for toilet facilities

What changes have been made to the plan?

The shelter and footpath within the northern off-leash area have been moved further south to accommodate existing ground levels and ensure an accessible footpath from the existing carpark.

Note: fence heights and the separation of large and small dogs is consistent with what is provided at Acacia Park. The provision of agility infrastructure is not appropriate for this site given the land is prone to flooding. However, we will consider where agility infrastructure could be included in other off leash parks within the Newcastle local government area.
