Fort Scratchley presents Music of the Guns concert Saturday 3 March

26 Feb 2018

It's an iconic Newcastle site, a beloved part of our heritage, and a fantastic venue for a patriotic outdoor concert.

Join the Fort Scratchley Historical Society for the annual Music of the Guns concert Saturday 3 March from 6.30 to 8.30pm, with gates opening at 5.30pm. Fort Scratchley is owned and managed by Newcastle City Council.

The night's entertainment will include performances by The Australian Army Band Newcastle and the Newcastle Grammar School Symphony Orchestra on the Fort's Parade Ground.

Bring along a picnic, a small chair or rug and a bottle of wine (small eskys only) and enjoy the sights and sounds of this event, including a firing of the Fort's guns.

"Since the late 1890s, Fort Scratchley has been involved in organising social functions that have enriched the cultural life of Newcastle," said Frank Carter, president of the Historical Society. "Music of the Guns continues that tradition and now forms a major event in the Fort's calendar each year."

"Bring the family along, have a picnic and enjoy a relaxing evening," said Mr Carter. "Everyone's favourite is the culminating performance of Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture when the Fort's historic Mark VII guns will fire and the carbon arc searchlight will illuminate Newcastle Cathedral."

The Australian Army Band Newcastle is a progressive band with a diverse range of ensembles. Its lineage can be traced back through various Army Reserve units based in Newcastle, making it one of Australia's oldest military bands, serving almost continuously since at least 1870.

The Newcastle Grammar School Symphony Orchestra consists of 50 young musicians and is an auditioned ensemble for students in Years 7 to 12, which has been together for 10 years.

"Every year, we look forward to hosting these fine bands at Fort Scratchley and providing an evening of patriotic musical entertainment for the community," said Frank Carter.
