Parking help for Newcastle East residents

13 Jul 2017

Long-scheduled changes to metered parking in Newcastle East have been brought forward to end the problem of residents being unable to locate a car space in their own neighbourhood.

From Monday, a total of 90 all-day eight-hour (8P) and 12-hour (12P) metered parking spaces in Newcastle East will permanently become two or four-hour parking zones.

The moves have been fast-tracked to coincide with the civil works program for the inaugural Newcastle 500 Supercars event.

Parking along Wharf Road, from Watt Street to Queens Wharf, will switch temporarily from two hour (2P) and four-hour (4P) to eight hour (8P) zones to help offset the loss of all-day parking.

Previously planned as part of the city's ongoing revitalisation, the Newcastle East changes will make it easier for residents, business users and visitors to park their car.

Off-street car parks currently operated throughout the city centre by Council and private operators will continue to provide more than 3,300 all-day parking spaces.

All-day paid parking remains available at the Mall car park, Civic West car park, Bolton Street car park, Hunter Street car park (former David Jones car park), Harbour Park car park, Wright Lane car park, Lee Wharf car park, Throsby car park, Boat Harbour car park, Civic Public car park, No.2 Sportsground, Parry Street car park and Cottage Creek car park.

"We're removing all-day metered parking in Newcastle East after considering the concerns many east end residents have expressed," Interim CEO Jeremy Bath said.

"The decision will provide these residents some relief, create more parking turnover for businesses and hopefully prompt commuters to start thinking about alternative forms of transport, such as cycling or making use of the free inner-city bus service in place before the light rail service begins.

"The changes come from consultation with east end residents and businesses, via the Major Events Residents Working Group, and align with Council's long-term focus to prioritise active and public transport."

To further accommodate resident parking, Newcastle East permit holders will temporarily be able to park without time limits on the southern end of Telford St alongside Pacific Park.

A temporary grassed parking area with 58 spaces at the bottom of Fort Scratchley will also be made available 24/7 for Nobbys Road and Parnell Place residents.
