Stage One - Public Domain Plan
The West End will become the centre of our city’s future business district.
- Developing Birdwood Park as the place for civic and cultural events with a pedestrian plaza, open green spaces and café or public amenities.
- Expanding Little Birdwood Park to better integrate with Marketown Shopping Centre.
- New pavements and a green streetscape ideal for small scale markets and festivals for Parry Street west of National Park Street.
Stage Two - Streetscape Plan
Creating a safe, accessible precinct around the Newcastle Interchange where vibrant streetscapes will facilitate greater use of active transport.
Sections of this plan have commenced the detailed design phase.
Features include traffic upgrades, separated cycleways, new dedicated green spaces, wider streets alfresco dining options, installation of ‘rain gardens’ to protect our rivers and creeks and five green spaces to reduce the ‘heat island’ effect.
Find out more about the planned cycleways
A safe, separated east-west cycleway in the Stage Two plan will stretch from Wickham Park to Union Street along Hunter Street’s southern edge, running between the footpath and a new island bus stop with greenery outside the “Spotlight” corner.
Another separated cycleway will run north from National Park to Honeysuckle along the western side of Steel Street better connecting the Junction and Merewether with the harbour foreshore.
New crossings will also be created for pedestrians along Hunter Street as part of the Stage Two upgrades.
