Night Galleries

This project is an exercise in the concept that the more people in a space, the safer it will be. It includes the creation of purpose built interactive light installations in various locations across the city.

The Installations

These installations are pretty special! They illuminate space and display works of art drawn from the Newcastle Art Gallery collection. They have light, sound, are responsive to touch or movement, and even have augmented reality (utilising the Newcastle City App).

Each unit has been built in such a way that while they are modular, each location can have different experiences.

They also sleep

When no one is nearby, or the batteries are low, the installations will sleep, demonstrating the finite resource of power and the importance of conserving supply.

The project has been jointly funded by the City of Newcastle and NSW Communities and Justice in partnership with the University of Newcastle FastLab, Newcastle Art Gallery, and local technology partners.

Where to find them

Take a walk through the city to explore installations at Kuwumi Place and Pacific Park. Download the City App and view the 'Night Galleries' walking trail for an interactive wayfinding experience. Click to view the program catalogues for Kuwumi Place, or Pacific Park.
