Sharps are a hazard to both workers and the public if they make their way into landfills or recycling centres. There are a variety of avenues available to responsibly dispose of them.
The Newcastle Community Health Centre, located at 670 Hunter Street, provides a free 24-hour sharps disposal unit. Sharps containers are also available for collection, free of charge, Monday to Friday between 8am and 4pm.
ACON, at 129 Maitland Rd, Islington, also provide a disposal bin accessible 24 hours.
The Diabetes NSW Resource Centre, at 535 Hunter Street, Newcastle, provide a sharps disposal service for people with diabetes.
There are also a number of government and non-government agencies across the Newcastle LGA that offer free disposal services. To find an outlet nearest you, phone 02 4016 4519 or 0409 846 651.
Safesharps.org.au assists sharps users to find the most convenient location to dispose of their sharps safely. The on-line facility allows users to submit a location address and then search for the locations of single needle disposal points, sharps’ container disposal points or sellers of sharps’ containers.

For the clean-up of discarded needles and syringes found in public places, call the NSW Needle Clean Up Hotline on 1800 633 353.
The hotline is staffed from Monday to Friday between 8am and 6.30pm, with an answering machine at other times.
