History of Fort Scratchley

A place with a story to tell

Perched above Newcastle Harbour, Fort Scratchley has been a place of gathering, celebration and significance for over 200 years.

Today, it offers a truly unique setting for weddings, events and conferences, where history, heritage, and breathtaking views come together.

From lookout to landmark

Long before it became a fort, this headland was an important place for local Aboriginal people. Its height offered sweeping views across the coastline, while the land below provided natural resources.

In the early 1800s, the site became part of Australia’s first coal mining operations, helping shape Newcastle’s identity as an industrial and port city.

A site of national significance

By the late 1800s, the headland’s strategic position made it vital for defending the harbour.

Fort Scratchley was built in 1882, with gun emplacements carefully positioned to protect the coastline. Soldiers lived and worked on site, and the fort played an active role in Australia’s defence.

Most notably, in June 1942, Fort Scratchley became the only Australian coastal fort to fire on an enemy vessel during World War II.

From defence to community

After being decommissioned in the 1960s, the site transitioned from military use to a place for the community.

By the late 1970s, Fort Scratchley had reopened as a cultural and heritage destination, welcoming visitors to explore its tunnels, grounds and history.

Major restoration works completed in 2008 helped preserve the site for future generations.
