The transformation of Newcastle into a smart, liveable and sustainable global city continues, and we have many projects under construction as part of a record $116 million capital works program for 2020/21 that will sustain up to 700 local jobs and increase the city’s economic output by $275 million.

Priority Projects

Our Priority Projects are the result of extensive community consultation which helps form the Newcastle 2030 Community Strategic Plan.

We're working on a number of local area traffic management and pedestrian improvement projects.

Playground replacement program

Each year up to five playgrounds are included in annual asset renewal works program.

Road rehabilitation and resurfacing works scheduled for 2020/21.

City Centre to Merewether Cycleway - Stage One

We have begun work on the first leg of the City Centre to Merewether Beach cycleway project.

Adamstown - Glebe Road local centre and traffic improvements

We've completed preliminary civil works on Glebe Road in preparation for future installation of traffic control signals at Glebe Road and Park Avenue.

Cooks Hill - Council Street renewal

We have upgraded the drainage in Council Street, Cooks Hill, between Dawson and Darby streets to reduce flood risk to residents, and delivered new footpaths, landscaping, seven extra parking spaces and public art.

Cooks Hill - Swan Street renewal

Work is underway to rehabilitate Swan Street, Cooks Hill, between Darby Street and Mosbri Crescent. Stage 1 is complete, with future stages in planning.

Foreshore Park Precinct

We are beginning work to prepare a Landscape Master Plan for the Harbour Foreshore Precinct within Newcastle’s East End.

Islington - Chinchen and Clyde Street intersection

We are installing traffic lights at the intersection of Chinchen and Clyde streets Islington to improve traffic, pedestrian and cyclist movements in the area.

Newcastle - City Hall restoration

Work to refurbish the western and northern façades of Newcastle City Hall is underway.

Newcastle - Perkins Street Stairs

Perkins Street stairs are closed until further notice, please consider using Wolfe Street as a safer route for access between Church and Perkins Street.

No. 1 Sportsground Redevelopment

The redevelopment of No. 1 Sportsground, to meet regional AFL and cricket standards, is now underway.

Shortland - Richmond Vale Rail Trail

The Richmond Vale Rail Trail is proposed to run along the former Richmond Vale rail line between Kurri Kurri and Hexham and along the former Chichester to Newcastle water pipeline between Shortland and Tarro.

Waratah - Maud Street road safety improvements

We are implementing traffic changes in Maud Street, Waratah, to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists using the University to Newcastle City cycling route.
