City of Newcastle (CN) is responsible for the allocation of address numbers to all properties within the Newcastle Local Government Area.
Accurate addressing is required to ensure efficient and accurate location by delivery, utility and emergency services, and the public.
On occasion, residents may have cause to request a change of house numbering. This is usually when a property has multiple street frontages or is on a corner block.
CN will only consider changing a street or unit number if there are difficulties in locating the property.
Changes will not be approved if the reason for the request is one of the following:
- Personal preference
- Religious reasons
- Superstition
- Avoidance of unlucky numbers
- Changes to property value
An application to alter an existing street address can be made using the Street Numbering Application - Change of Existing Street Numbering.
Please note that a fee may be charged prior to new addressing being allocated, as per CN's Fees and Charges document.
During the Development Application (DA) process you may be required to apply for a new property address or sub-addressing. Applications for addressing of a new development can be made using the Street Numbering Application - New Dwellings form.
New addressing provided by CN will be in accordance with the NSW Address Policy and User Manual and the Australian/New Zealand Standard: Rural and Urban Addressing (AS/NZS 4819:2011).
CN will ensure that following authorities are notified of any changes to addressing in the Newcastle Local Government Area:

- Land Registry Services

- Hunter Water Corporation
