Meet the Future
It’s time to meet our Newcastle Environment Strategy (NES).
It's our ambitious roadmap for a sustainable Newcastle - for a future that protects our unique local lifestyle and all the places we love - our coastline, our beaches and our bushland, creeks and waterways.
It’s a future powered by renewable energy, with electric vehicles, and walking and cycling options all over the city. It combines efficient and comfortable homes and businesses with a healthy local environment that’s well connected by our urban forest and waterways. Together, we can all meet a future that’s full of innovations to improve the places we live, work and play in.
We’ll connect you with the information and tools you need to create this future, to sustain the Newcastle we love and share, while caring for and improving our local environment.
Let’s make it a future worth meeting.
Introducing the Newcastle Environment Strategy
We all need to work together to respond to the climate emergency and create a net zero future for Newcastle.
Through our Newcastle Environment Strategy and our Climate Action Plan, we'll continue to roll out public electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure, and help households and businesses access renewable energy, become more energy efficient, and make the switch from gas to electrification.
We'll also help our community become more resilient to the impacts of climate change. Because a net zero future is a future worth meeting.
Here’s how you can be part of our transition to a net zero future:
- Check out our community climate action program Empowering Newcastle
- Sign up to the Empowering Newcastle e-Newsletter
Our quality of life depends on the health of our local environment. Through the Newcastle Environment Strategy, we'll expand our urban forest, enhance our biodiversity corridors, and build a network of high quality blue and green spaces that connects our town centres, public transport hubs, schools and residential areas.
We will continue to protect the health of our coastline, bushland, creeks and waterways and wetlands, and build more resilient natural areas to the impacts of climate change. Because a future with a healthy environment is a future worth meeting.
Here's how you can connect with new ways to sustain and regenerate our local environment:
- Plant a verge garden
- Request a street tree
- Sign up to our Natural Connection newsletter to hear more ways to get involved and attend one of our events
We are committed to providing waste minimisation and recycling solutions to our community, to catalyse our local circular economy.
Through the Newcastle Environment Strategy, we are recovering a wide range of items, including building materials, green waste, whitegoods and electrical waste, for reuse or recycling into new products. We are also increasing the utilisation of recovered materials and sustainable product alternatives in our operations and construction activities.
Because a circular economy future is a future worth meeting.
Connect with ways to reduce, recycle, reuse and repurpose goods and materials, and turn waste into a valuable resource:
- Join the Curby soft plastics recycling program
- Learn what needs to be safely disposed of and take your problem wastes to Summerhill Waste Management Centre for recycling
- Join our home composting revolution program
