Our Commitment to Sustainability
City of Newcastle was the first local government in NSW to make the switch to 100 per cent renewable electricity. Strongly committed to sustainability right across the organisation, the City has delivered key projects to reduce our environmental impact while achieving strong financial savings from these actions for ratepayers. A five-megawatt solar farm on a former landfill site, various rooftop solar installations, upgrading street lights to LEDs, supporting the transition to electric transport and building an organics processing facility are also part of the sustainability push. As a signatory of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, the City recognises that the world faces a climate emergency and is actively working to help achieve the Paris Climate Agreement goals and create a net zero emissions future.
