Projects and Works

Our list of projects extends across the city, with increased investments in community infrastructure, facilities and services that will help renew and reinvigorate Newcastle as we continue to build an inclusive, liveable, and sustainable city.

Almost $140 million has been earmarked for investment into local facilities and infrastructure projects as part of the 2024/25 Budget. It includes our largest annual capital works program to date, with more than 280 projects and 170 actions planned across the city.

Our Delivery Program and Operational Plan reflects our integrated approach to support the Newcastle 2040 Community Strategic Plan.

Priority Projects

Our Priority Projects are the result of extensive community consultation which helped form the Newcastle 2030 Community Strategic Plan.

Local Centres Program

The Local Centres Program guides the infrastructure renewal works within the local centres throughout the Newcastle LGA.

Pedestrian and traffic improvement projects

We're working on a number of local area traffic management and pedestrian improvement projects.

Road Rehabilitation and Resurfacing

Road rehabilitation and resurfacing works occur on a regular basis right across the city.

Playground Replacement Program

Each year up to five playgrounds are included in annual asset renewal works program.

Shortland Esplanade embankment stabilisation

We are improving public safety by restabilising two sections of the embankment along Shortland Esplanade (below Fort Drive) near Nobbys Beach kiosk and opposite the Cowrie Hole.

Newcastle Art Gallery Expansion

Newcastle Art Gallery has been at the heart of our city’s rich arts and cultural history for over forty years. Now, the story of its future has begun.

Newcastle Ocean Baths Upgrade

We are in the process of revitalising the Newcastle Ocean Baths.

Astra Street, Shortland - Remediation of former landfill

We are undertaking environmental remediation work at a former landfill in Shortland to maintain the local protected environment.

Blackbutt Reserve multipurpose community facility and café

We are delivering a new multipurpose community facility and kiosk at Newcastle’s beating green heart, Blackbutt Reserve.

Broadmeadow Regionally Significant Growth Area

The Hunter Regional Plan 2041, prepared by the Department of Planning and Environment (DPE), identifies Broadmeadow as a regionally significant growth area and a priority location for future housing.

City Centre to Merewether Cycleway - Stage One

We have completed the first leg of the City Centre to Merewether Beach cycleway project.

City Hall restoration

Work to refurbish the western and northern façades of Newcastle City Hall has been completed.

Coastal Buildings Revitalisation Plan

We are in the early stages of developing a Coastal Buildings Revitalisation Plan to enable a proactive approach to the maintenance and renewal of coastal assets.

Cottage Creek bridge replacement, Hunter Street

We are planning the replacement of the 100 year old Cottage Creek bridge, constructing a new bridge that is fit for purpose moving into the future in this busy section of Hunter Street.

Darling Street Oval, Hamilton South - Grandstand

Hamilton South is now better equipped to cater for the growth of women's football in our region thanks to the completion of a new grandstand and upgrades at Darling Street Oval valued at over $3 million.

East End Village

We are progressing works on the East End Village project, with the first phase of works now complete.

Georgetown Local Centre upgrade

We are planning an upgrade to the look and feel of Georgetown Local Centre, delivering a safer, more attractive place to visit.

Glebe Road, Adamstown - traffic improvements

We've completed preliminary civil works on Glebe Road in preparation for future installation of traffic control signals at Glebe Road and Park Avenue.

Gregson Park Playspace

Construction to deliver a new inclusive playspace at Hamilton's much-loved Gregson Park is now well underway.

Harbour Foreshore Precinct

We have commenced work at Foreshore Park to prepare for the future construction of Newcastle's largest children’s playground.

Hunter Street Trial Cycleway

We have implemented a trial cycleway connection along Hunter Street, between National Park Street and Worth Place.

Ironbark Creek Rehabilitation

Work is underway on the next stage of our rehabilitation of Ironbark Creek.

Islington Park Dog Off Leash Area

We have enhanced the existing off leash area at Islington Park.

Jefferson Park

The Jefferson Park Concept Plan will inform future minor improvements to the park.

Johnson Park, Tarro Reserve & Pat Jordan field upgrades

Funded by City of Newcastle and the NSW Government’s Level the Playing Field Program, Tarro Reserve, Johnson Park at Lambton and Pat Jordan at Carrington will share in more than $3.3 million worth of upgrades.

Repair works, King Street breakwater

We are repairing damage along the King Street breakwater in Stockton following erosion events, and reinstating access for the community, including a new accessway to South Stockton Beach.

Lambton Park War Memorial Swimming Centre

We have celebrated the completion of the new $2.2 million concrete grandstand.

Lugar Park, Kotara South - Amenities Upgrade

The extension and upgrades to the sports amenities facility at Lugar Park, Kotara South has now been completed.

Proposed Material Recovery Facility

We are proposing to expand our operations at the Summerhill Waste Management Centre to include a Material Recovery Facility.

Maryland Fenced Off-Leash Dog Park Stage One Works

Stage One of our upgrade at Maryland Off-Leash Dog Park is now complete.

Maud Street, Waratah West - road safety improvements

We are implementing traffic changes in Maud Street, Waratah, to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists using the University to Newcastle City cycling route.

Memorial Drive embankment stabilisation and new footpath

We are working to restabilise a section of embankment along Memorial Drive, The Hill, following a land slip during a period of significant rainfall.

Mitchell Street Upgrade, Stockton

As part of our Local Centres Program, we have delivered a complete upgrade of Mitchell Street in Stockton.

New protection structures, Southern end of Mitchell Street seawall

We have commenced the construction of more protection structures at the southern end of the Mitchell Street seawall in Stockton to shield the shoreline and reduce the chance of inundation during large swells.

Nelson Street, Wallsend - Road Resurfacing

Maintenance works are happening along Nelson Street, Wallsend.

No. 1 Sportsground Redevelopment

We have redeveloped No. 1 Sportsground to meet regional AFL and cricket standards.

Orchardtown Road Upgrade, New Lambton

As part of our Local Centres Program, we are upgrading Orchardtown Road, New Lambton.

Proposed Organics Processing Facility

We are proposing to build an organics processing facility at Summerhill Waste Management Centre to process food and garden waste, diverting it from landfill.

Passmore Oval Wickham Grandstand

The redevelopment of the grandstand has delivered dedicated female home and away changerooms, accessible amenities and viewing areas, a community meeting room, shared exercise training area and storage rooms.

Perkins Street Retaining Wall

We have completed restoration works on the heritage sandstone retaining wall and stairs linking Church Street and Perkins Street, Newcastle.

Richmond Vale Rail Trail

The Richmond Vale Rail Trail is a proposed cycling and walking track along the former Richmond Vale rail line between Kurri Kurri and Hexham, along the former Chichester to Newcastle water pipeline between Shortland and Tarro.

Shepherds Hill Cottage

The community will soon be given a chance to enjoy one of the city's best vantage points as we finalise the renewal of Shepherds Hill Cottage.

Sportsfield upgrade, Smith Park, Hamilton

We are delivering a multimillion-dollar upgrade of the popular Hamilton North sportsground.

Throsby Creek riverwall repair works

We recently undertook works to rehabilitate the Throsby Creek riverwall to ensure it continues to be an important ecological, recreational and visual asset valued by our community.

University Drive, Waratah West, Stormwater improvements and new footbridge

We have improved the flow of stormwater in the area and delivered a new footbridge for pedestrians and cyclists alongside University Drive, Waratah West.

Wallsend Active Hub

We have delivered a $1.5 million active hub in Wallsend's Federal Park.

Wallsend, Boscawen and Nelson Street bridge replacements

The replacement of Wallsend's Boscawen Street bridge is one of a series of projects in development to improve flood mitigation, as well as the look and feel of Wallsend's local centre area.

Water heating upgrades across our inland pool network

We are planning essential water heating upgrades for Wallsend and Mayfield Swimming Centres.

Western Corridor Upgrades - Minmi Rd & Longworth Ave, Wallsend

The city's growing western corridor has led to increased traffic over time. We are now working to improve conditions along this important link to the city.

Woodward Street, Merewether - Road and Embankment

This project is looking to identify in greater detail the issues and concerns that the community have in relation to the road and embankment, in order to explore possible options to enhance conditions.

Calculation of infrastructure in need of renewal

We have brought the method of calculating infrastructure in need of renewal in line with best practice to ensure ratepayers’ money is spent where it is needed most.
