A shed is used for the storage of domestic items (excluding a vehicle) or a workspace to do domestic repairs and maintenance, i.e. garden shed, tool shed.
A domestic shed can only be built on land that an existing dwelling is located on, it cannot be located on a vacant allotment
If the shed meets the exempt development criteria found in the Subdivision 9, State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008 you do not need to apply to council or a private certifier for development consent.
Should the shed not meet the exempt development criteria, development approval will be required. There are complying development approvals that a private certifier or Council can approve as long as the proposed shed meets the Complying Development code.
The other option is to apply for a Development Application through Council, in which case you would need to meet the development criteria of the current Newcastle Development Control Plan (DCP).
