New Foreshore parking spaces open

More than 500 parking spaces have reopened to the public across Newcastle East following the conclusion of the "bump-out" period of the inaugural Newcastle 500.

From this afternoon, the new off-street car park on Wharf Rd will open to the public, with more than 150 spaces providing 8P all-day paid parking.

Council CEO Jeremy Bath said the aim was to create a more even balance between the needs of motorists who wanted to park all day and those who wanted to visit the CBD for just a few hours.

"These new all-day parking spaces will complement planned changes to parking on Wharf Rd," he said.

"From early 2018, paid parking along the north side of Wharf Rd, from Merewether St to Watt St, will switch from 4P to 2P."

The Queens Wharf car parks - previously 2P - and Boat Harbour car park just west of Harry's Café de Wheels - previously 8P - will both become 4P zones.

Improvements to car parks around the Foreshore precinct were among the most significant works during Council's East End renewal scheme in the lead-up to last month's Newcastle 500.

New angled parking has been introduced on Wharf Rd east of the newly expanded off-street car park, and more parking spaces have been created on Horseshoe Beach Rd and in the Nobbys Beach car park.

Mr Bath said the precinct now boasted almost 150 more parking spaces than it did before the renewal scheme began.

"This is yet another example of the long-term benefits delivered by our city hosting the final round of the Supercars Australia Championship," he said.

"As promised, the Supercars bump-out has come to an end before Christmas. Planning is already under way to ensure an even bigger, better Newcastle 500 in 2018, without the need for the major capital works we've seen over the past seven months."
