Nelson Street, Wallsend - Road Resurfacing

We've started work to resurface Nelson Street in Wallsend to deliver a smoother and safer travel for road users and are also improving gardens, street furniture and other streetscape elements to deliver improved amenity in Wallsend town centre.

This project which will run over the coming months is part of a broader delivery of road rehabilitation and resurfacing works which include upgrades at Boscawen Street to Tyrrell Street and further investment into stormwater upgrades.

To help minimise disruption, the works will be completed in 3 stages with the below improvement works taking place:

  • Stage 1: Rectification works to stormwater pits between Boscawen Street and Tyrrell Street - ongoing
  • Stage 2: Remove existing road pavement and upgrade (mill and fill) along Boscawen Street to Tyrrell Street (including intersection) - completed
  • Stage 3: Maintenance works currently underway Tyrrell Street to Cowper Street - expected completion mid-2024.

All work will be completed between 6:00PM and 5:00AM Monday to Friday.

There will also be some temporary traffic changes to vehicular and pedestrian access during this project. Traffic control will be onsite to manage traffic and pedestrian movements during our works.

Local resident access will be maintained unless otherwise directly communicated.

There's more large-scale infrastructure projects in the pipeline for the area, including two dual-lane road upgrades at Longworth Avenue and Minmi Road, Wallsend, which are designed to reduce traffic congestion in the western corridor and are currently undergoing detailed design.

This project is fully funded from the 2023/24 Capital Works budget.
