Aboriginal Employment
The Awabakal and Worimi peoples are acknowledged by Council as the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters of Newcastle.
City of Newcastle has demonstrated its commitment to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples through the signing of A Commitment by City Of Newcastle To Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples of The City of Newcastle in 1998.
We further demonstrated our commitment to the reconciliation process and social justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Newcastle LGA by launching a new Reconciliation Action Plan 2021-2024 and the Aboriginal Employment Strategy (AES) 2022-2025. The new AES reiterates our commitment to be a diverse and culturally inclusive workplace through our continued engagement and collaboration with the local Indigenous community.
We are currently developing our first Inclusion, Diversity & Equity (IDE) Strategy 2022-2026. The IDE Strategy will outline the steps we are going to take over the next four years to embed inclusion into our workplace culture. Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Engagment is one the Strategy's five focus areas. We want Council to be a great place to work for everyone and an employer of choice, as well as being representative of the rich and diverse needs of the Newcastle community.
These following documents form part of the tiered structure of strategies that align with the legislative Integrated Planning and Reporting framework.
