Our Urban Forest

In recognition of the value and importance of trees in the urban environment we adopted the Urban Forest Policy in 2008. By integrating the goals and objectives of this policy with our programs and processes and adopting arboricultural best practice, City of Newcastle is acknowledged as a leader in urban tree management.

Community Urban Forest Program

In 2020 and 2021 we have partnered with the Greater Bank to plant 20,000 new trees across seven sites in Newcastle.

What is an Urban Forest?

Urban forest is the collection of trees, shrubs, groundcovers and wetlands on public, private and institutional land within a Local Government Area.

Private Trees

We value private trees as an integral component of Newcastle's urban forest. A private tree is any tree on land not under City of Newcastle's care and control.

Public Trees

Council considers trees to be significant capital assets. They are as much part of the community infrastructure as roads and footpaths.
