We are delivering a new multipurpose community facility and café at Newcastle’s beating green heart, Blackbutt Reserve.

Blackbutt Reserve occupies approximately 182 hectares of land and offers over 10km of walking trails. With native animal enclosures, walking trails, children’s playgrounds and tranquil picnic areas, the reserve welcomes countless locals and visitors each year and is home to the weekly Blackbutt Parkrun.

This project supports the last stage of the Carnley Avenue Recreation Area Masterplan, detailed within the Blackbutt Plan of Management 2012 and will be a significant step in delivering our shared vision for Blackbutt Reserve.

Works to be completed

The construction will complement the amenity and playground upgrades.

Alongside a café with undercover dining and seating area, the multipurpose community facility will feature a community space enabling groups to gather and collaborate, host events and enable school groups to visit and learn about the environment.

Optimising views over Blackbutt Reserve, the new facility and café will be inclusive and fully accessible, with a design catering for people with mobility and other sensory impairment issues.

Next steps

Works are now underway to deliver the new multi-purpose community facility and cafe at Blackbutt Reserve.

As we deliver this new facility, Blackbutt Reserve and their furry residents will continue to welcome locals and visitors.

Footpaths connecting Carnley and Richley Reserves will remain accessible, allowing visitors to access the wildlife exhibits, playground, amenities and car parks Weather permittingthe new space to gather and dine will be complete by late 2024.

Please follow the directions shown on the signage and instructions given by contractors and our Blackbutt volunteers on site
