
Maud Street, Waratah West - road safety improvements
We have implementing traffic changes in Maud Street Waratah West to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists using the University to Newcastle City cycling route.
The cycleway between the University of Newcastle (Callaghan) and the Newcastle City Centre is a key regional route in Newcastle's cycling network. Crossing Maud Street before this project presented major safety and accessibility issues for both cyclists using the cycleway and pedestrians. We have now improved this crossing with a new signalised mid-block crossing.
Key features of the project include:
- Construction of a signalised mid-block crossing between Prince Street and Vera Street.
- Kerb extensions with shared paths on Prince Street and Vera Street to allow cyclists to safely connect to the crossing
- Two travel lanes northbound on Maud Street between Lorna Street and Maitland Road.
- No exit from Vera Street at Maud Street to enhance the safety at this intersection.
We have been liaising with Transport for NSW and other external agencies throughout to ensure that all requirements are addressed.
Construction has commenced in Prince Street with some minor landscaping still to happen.

The R6 is the University (Callaghan) to Newcastle City cycleway.
The route is shown in the map at http://www.newcastle.nsw.gov.au/OnYourBike/Find-Your-Path (select Newcastle City to University). The project has assisted what was a challenging crossing for cyclists to negotiate.

3 September 2024 - Maud Street upgrade rolling out to create safer cycling connections
November 2024 - Works have been delayed with due to outstanding approvals required from utility authorities. We are working to resolve this as soon as possible to continue work on site.
January 2025 - Relevant approval has been provided and the project will recommence with the installation of the traffic control signals expected to be completed by March 2025 (pending weather).
February 2025 - New linemarking and traffic signals are in place with some minor landscaping work remaining for Prince Street. We thank everyone for their patience while we work to complete the project.
