Message from the Lord Mayor

Lord Mayor Nuatali Nelmes

We’ve just started delivering our biggest ever infrastructure program to improve your local streets, footpaths and public areas as part of our 2024/25 Budget.

A key focus of this Budget is balancing financial sustainability while maintaining a high level of essential community services.

We’re increasing our works program to $139.5 million this year to invest in a range of essential projects across Newcastle, with $14.6 million for roads and footpaths, including $5 million for renewing roads in the western corridor and $7.7 million on stormwater projects and flood planning in areas such as Mayfield East and Darby Street.

We're revitalising our coast, city, and urban centres with $9.9 million for projects such as the East End Public Domain Plan, Hunter Street Mall and local centre upgrades at Orchardtown Road, New Lambton, and Georgetown.

Delivering our Newcastle Environment Strategy remains a priority, with investment across a range of initiatives, including $2.8 million to help improve bushland and watercourses.

We're also planning towards major coastal projects, with community consultation now open for the final stage of the Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade, and a key link in our iconic Bathers Way pathway through King Edward Park.

These projects are fundamental to building an inclusive, liveable, and sustainable city, and ensuring we continue to be an attractive destination for visitors and investment.

Nuatali Nelmes
Lord Mayor of Newcastle

Digging in for the environment

Beresfield Primary School students pulled on their gardening gloves to help City of Newcastle staff plant street trees near their school.

We're getting out and about in the community to plant thousands of native grasses, shrubs and trees as part of our 10-year Newcastle Environment Strategy.

The Strategy will help us create an environmental legacy for future generations as we work towards net zero emissions; reducing, reusing and repurposing waste; and protecting our local environment.

Increasing our urban forest is a key priority under our Newcastle Environment Strategy, which we've been working towards through a series of community tree planting events at locations including Shortland, Beresfield, Tarro and Wallsend.

Key link in Bathers Way pathway

A concept design for Bathers Way King Edward Park, which will enhance the accessibility of the site.

We're giving you a chance to have your say on the concept designs for the Bathers Way at King Edward Park.

Featuring a wide shared pathway, the project will transform a section of the Bathers Way between the Terrace car park near Shepherd’s Hill Cottage and South Newcastle Beach.

The project will create more accessible connections between King Edward Park's key features and enhance opportunities to appreciate the city's spectacular coastal scenery.

Vision for Newcastle Ocean Baths

A render from the Concept Plan for the final stage of the Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade.

We've unveiled a vision for the final stage of the Newcastle Ocean Baths upgrade, which preserves the heritage of the facility while ensuring it is fit-for-purpose for future generations.

The concept plan incorporates the revitalisation of the pavilion buildings including the Art Deco façade, while also enhancing the upper promenade and surrounding areas.

Other upgrades include an expanded kiosk, new community spaces, shade structures and seating, as well as inclusive changerooms that cater for all members of the community.

You can learn more about the concept plan and provide feedback until 5 August by visiting our We Love Our Coast Have Your Say page on our website.
