Celebrating disability inclusion across our community

Making sports and recreation activities accessible to everyone

In 2024, Count Us In was held for it's fifth year with City of Newcastle partnering with sporting groups/clubs, disability organisations and others to recognise the important role of sports and recreation activities in our lives.

Aligning with the 2024 Paris Olympics and Paralympics, Count Us In Sport focused our efforts upon making sport more accessible for the estimated 1 in 6 Newcastle residents who live with a disability.

1 in 5
20% of people in Australia live with a disability (1 in 6 in the Newcastle LGA)
75%
3 in 4 people with a disability feel excluded from sports and recreation
1 in 4
Only 25% of people with a disability currently participate in sport

Everyone deserves the chance to play, volunteer, support or follow their favourite team or code. That’s why this year’s Count Us In program focused on five key events to promote greater accessibility and inclusion across the LGA.

Our 2024 program included an Inclusive Sports Forum with Former Newcastle Knight Alex McKinnon and Summer and Winter Paralympian Rae Anderson as keynote speakers. This included sharing practical ways organisations can put disability inclusion into practice.

Thanks to all those who attended one of the events of the 2024 program to help make sport, a place where everyone can play.

Five years of working together to improve inclusion in our LGA

Since 2019, the annual Count Us In festival has invited our local community to engage with, and learn from, people with lived experience of disability.

Over the last 5 years, the City of Newcastle and our community partner Community Disability Alliance Hunter (CDAH) have worked with over 120 providers to deliver over 150 events to promote disability inclusion, attracting over 5000 attendees.
