Walking and Cycling

Walking and cycling are basic, affordable forms of travel available to almost all ages and groups in society. In Newcastle, though private cars are the dominant mode for commuting and, indeed, all trip purposes, the large majority of trips are at distances that could reasonably be undertaken by walking or cycling. Coupled with large areas of relatively flat topography and Newcastle’s favourable climate, potential for mode substitution is high.

Changes in travel behaviour, from use of the car to walking and cycling, especially for short trips, can make a difference to a range of environmental, health, economic and social benefits outcomes. There are benefits for the individual and the wider community.
