Cycleway projects

We are always working on expanding and improving our network of cycleways. Projects are in various stages of planning, design and construction.

Current projects include:

  • Broadmeadow to Newcastle West cycleway (R5 – Newcastle City to Wallsend)
We are investigating options to improve the section which passes over Donald Street Bridge to complement already completed upgrades from Beaumont Street to Selma Street.
  • Maud Street, Waratah (R6 – Newcastle City to University, Callaghan)
Designs have been approved and enabling works commenced for traffic signals on Maud Street to create a safer crossing at a challenging intersection.
  • Chinchen Street, Islington
Designs are under development for a shared pathway in association with new traffic lights at the intersection of Clyde and Chinchen Street, with connections to Maitland Road and Chatham Road. Intersection works are now complete with further planning of the proposed shared pathway to follow.
  • Glebe Road at Park Avenue traffic signals (R1 – Newcastle City to Belmont and Swansea)
A project to install traffic lights at the intersection of Glebe Road and Park Avenue will include controlled crossings for cyclists.
  • Richmond Vale Rail Trail and Shortland to Tarro Cycleway
The Richmond Vale Rail Trail is a proposed shared path from Hexham (Newcastle LGA) to Pelaw Main (Cessnock LGA) primarily along a former rail corridor. Environmental assessment and concept design has been undertaken for a shared path from Shortland to Tarro (mainly on the Hunter Water pipeline alignment) in conjunction with the Richmond Vale rail trail.
