Georgetown Local Centre
We are working to improve the look and feel of Georgetown Local Centre. Our proposed upgrade includes street renewal and landscaping with a focus on creating public space for socialising and outdoor trade, with improved connectivity for pedestrians and cyclists.
The upgrades aim to:
- Improve accessibility, safety and convenience for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Improve driver visibility and safety.
- Make improvements to infrastructure including drainage.
- Create more space for people by building wider footpaths and a new plaza.
- Improve the natural environment by providing more trees and landscaping.
These upgrades will benefit both businesses and residents – delivering a safer, more attractive place to visit, that attracts customers and presents an alternative to large shopping centres with access to an EV charging station.
Background
On 29 June 2021 the elected Council resolved to initiate a public domain upgrade for Georgetown under the Local Centres program. To find out more about the process for upgrading Local Centres view our process plan.
In 2021, we asked the local community what was most important about Georgetown Local Centre, and what could be improved. Almost 200 people had their say on what they love about Georgetown and what needs improving as summarised in our Engagement Report. Following this input from the community, we developed a draft Public Domain Plan.
The final Public Domain Plan was unanimously adopted by Council on 23 April 2024 and detailed design will now commence.

Staged works
Early works will commence late August and will further support the existing 40km/h zone. There will be upgraded speed control devices and additional entry infrastructure at 35 Moate Street and 30 and 76 Georgetown Road.
Streetscape and Plaza works include a new public plaza at the intersection of Moate Street and Georgetown Road, which will create an attractive destination to support the shopping precinct while also facilitating safer cycle access between Asher Street and Parkview Street. Detailed design is underway.
* Work is subject to detailed design.
