Electric Vehicles (EVs)

We have a growing number of EVs registered in and visiting Newcastle, which helps create a cleaner, quieter and lower emissions city.

The roll-out of public EV charging infrastructure is a key deliverable in the Newcastle Environment Strategy and an important way that we are supporting existing and future EV drivers.

Use this page to find EV charging locations, parking restrictions and payment information.

Where to charge your EV

City of Newcastle (CN) owns and operates EV chargers across Newcastle, with new private charging stations being installed regularly.

Use our interactive map* to locate available EV chargers, check charger types, and view real-time availability.

* The information on the interactive map is from the PlugShare digital database. CN cannot guarantee its accuracy.

Guide to EV charging

Different charging locations offer different ports and charging speeds that will be suitable for a range of scenarios.

Check out an overview of existing CN owned and operated EV chargers.

The time it takes to charge an EV is determined by a number of factors. Check out our EV charging guide for more information.

It is important to note that in addition to the charger, how fast you can charge also depends on your EV's on-board charging capacity. While a particular charger may be able to achieve a certain rate, your EV may not charge that fast (refer to your EV manual for details).

EV parking rules and restrictions

Only EVs that are actively charging can park in EV charging bays. Non-EVs, as well as EVs that are not charging while parked in an EV charging bay, may be issued with a parking penalty notice.

Parking time limits apply to EV charging bays. Please check the signage at each location.

If you are charging in a designated EV charging bay within a paid parking area, your currently only need to pay for charging, not parking.

You should move your EV before reaching the maximum amount of time shown on the signage. If your EV is not moved this may result in a parking penalty notice being issued.

Charging costs and how to pay

The cost for chargers up to 22kW is $0.20/kWh. The cost for 60kw chargers is $0.60/kWh.

Payment can be made via the Chargefox app or contactless payment.

Accessible EV charging

CN supports EV owners with accessibility needs by considering bay size, slopes, gradients, and the provision of ramps and safety features when planning for and delivering public EV charging infrastructure.

Where EV charging bays have a time-based restriction, Mobility Parking Scheme (MPS) holders can park for longer periods, in accordance with Transport for NSW rulings outlined below.

Signposted time limitMPS permit holder parking limit
More than 30 minutesUnlimited
30 minutesUp to 2 hours
Less than 30 minutesMaximum 30 minutes

Note: A MPS permit does not allow a non-EV to park in an EV only parking area, or to park an EV while not actively charging.
